French Onion Soup

Today I tried making French onion soup from scratch. It took forever, and we really liked it, but I'm not sure that it's one of those recipes that MUST be homemade. In England we used to buy a mix and then just broil the bread and cheese. I think that's just as good.

Though, this is one of the most rewarding recipes I've ever made with regards to enjoying the process. The smells, the textures, so incredible. I'd probably make it again so that I could enjoy the developing aroma. yum. We love it with Gruyere, but we've also tried Swiss and Emmentel (also a Swiss) and they work well too. Next time I'll use less cooking wine in the soup. It seemed to overpower it a bit. And yes, I got carded today in Macey's for cooking wine. Why wouldn't I just get real wine if I was underage?

Find the recipe here: The whole menu is fantastic, really. We were going to have all three items, but we weren't hungry. Probably because of the doughnuts. I love Tyler Florence (Tyler's Ultimate, How to Boil Water, etc.), on the Food Network, because he makes recipes you actually use. If we invite you over for dinner soon you just might find yourself enjoying 'Tyler's Ultimate Bistro' with this yummy soup...

That looks really good. Really really yummy. I know what you mean about spending tons of time on something and wondering if it was really worth it, though. I used to love watching How to Boil Water, once upon a time, so that made me smile to read that.

Anyway, I haven't said this yet, but I love this new blog. You're added in my favorites with the rest of my craft bloggers, so you're in "famous" company. Sometimes our blog becomes such a mix of everything that I wonder if I should do something separate like this, especially with kids. Maybe if I start getting into creative stuff again it would be worth it. :) Anyway, I love it. And the picture with this post looks wonderful, too.
