p.s. we were in Aruba during an uncharacteristically overcast/rainy week. It was still amazing. Amazing, I tell you. We already have a return trip planned with our children. We can't wait! These pictures were taken over the course of our stay. Looking back, I wish I'd taken more of the fantastic food we ate, as well as some of us relaxing on the beach. Let's just say, I was too lazy to take my camera, because I knew if I did I wouldn't be able to get into the water. Or relax, because I'd be too busy thinking about sand getting into my camera. Ugh.

p.p.s. If you ever find yourself in Aruba, you must eat at Simply Fish at the Marriott Resort. It is right on the beach, and you are encouraged to eat shoeless with the sand between your toes. It's perfect for a special occasion. Most people would categorize it as "expensive" unless they are from NYC. Then it goes in the "normal" category.

p.p.p.s. Did I mention that this is one of the most kid-friendly places I've ever vacationed? The water is calm, the weather is lovely, the pools are amazing, and at the Marriott resort there are playgrounds, kids rooms, kids activities all day, movie screenings in the evening, and even an incredible lazy river. It's amazing! Definitely a great spot for east coasters wishing they were a bit closer to Hawaii.

Oranjestad, Aruba {Historic City Center + Harbor}

Aruba is a hard place to describe. I didn't know what to expect when we arrived because we didn't really do any research about Aruba. That made it even more fun to discover. As you will see, it is an intriguing place, full of bright colors and beautiful, unassuming architecture. For the most part. Aruba is unique because it's not in the hurricane belt, and due to its location and the fact that it's essentially a desert, the weather is amazing year-round. There's virtually no off-season, and it's only a 3.5 hour flight from NYC. Perfect.

Perhaps one might say that Aruba has a bit of an identity crisis. You would have one too if you were a country located in the Carribean islands, but part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in close proximity to South America, and with two official languages: Dutch and Papiamento (which is a creole language that combines Portuguese, West African languages, Dutch, and Spanish- wikipedia taught me that). Most natives speak at least three languages, and many speak up to five fluently. Signs are in Dutch, Spanish, Papiamento, and English.

Oranjestad is charming indeed. The people are warm and welcoming, and seem to be perpetually happy in spite of the perpetual traffic. I still don't understand quite why there's traffic, but again, it adds to the charm of island hopping from Manhattan to Aruba. What a contrast.

We breezed through this part of town on our way to the Marriott Resort (on a cab ride where the driver suddenly realized he was nearly out of gas. So we stopped to fill up. Such is the pace of island life), and with all that we saw in a few eye blinks, we just had to go back and explore. And explore we did.

Kyle aptly said that it reminded him of places we'd traveled, but it was unlike anywhere we'd ever been.

Next up? Palm Beach, Aruba. You're going to love it.

p.s. This was one of the most difficult blog posts I've ever made because of all the contrasting, clashing color. You wouldn't believe how long it took me to put this together. It's kind of embarrassing, actually. For those of you who blog with a lot of pictures, like I do, you'll know how much time blog posts take anyway, but when nearly every image clashes with the next... sheesh!

How To Make A Wedding {DIY Wedding Prep}

This isn't your typical wedding prep post. You know, the bride getting her hair done, the groom putting on his tie, people relaxing as they wait for the festivities to begin. No, this is the actual wedding prep. The prep for all the details before the bride and her family can even think about getting dressed and ready to go, days before the wedding.

A friend just reminded me that I never delivered on my promise to talk about our wedding prep. As many of you know, Stef's wedding was almost entirely DIY. A labor of love, indeed! My wedding and my sister Stacey's wedding were both DIY as well, and we didn't do a very good job of documenting the process. I promised myself that I'd take some portraits of the prep work so that we'd always remember (and so that the bride and groom would too) I didn't do the best job of remembering to take portraits amidst the swirl of it all, but at least we have what we have.

Stef chose her priorities, and put the bulk of her budget in the places that mattered most to her. We were able to pool our resources to put the rest of the elements together in a creative, inexpensive way, that still maintained the level of quality we were going for. I loved the result.

My family put this wedding together from the ground up, with the help of Pinterest, a pantone book, and an obsessive attention to detail. We are blessed to have a mother who is a master of color, so she nearly killed herself coordinating the wardrobe, flowers, and design elements to ensure that they were all perfect color matches. It sure paid off, because everything photographed beautifully.

From the very beginning, we focused on the photography. In other words, we focused on the end product and how each of the elements would be captured through portraiture.

We tried to avoid the common trap of getting caught up in the color scheme (say the bride chooses yellow and grey, so EVERY element has to be either yellow or grey, and what you end up with is just kind of a crazy mess of color that is just far too overwhelming).

We focused on creating a complementary, more neutral backdrop for the pops of color that came through the floral design and accessories. You see this in the wardrobe of the wedding party as well as in the decor. We used softer, complementary colors to the coral, and then allowed the coral to speak for itself through the floral design (without being overbearing).

When were actually putting everything together days before the wedding, it was incredibly helpful to take portraits of the various elements to see how they would photograph. The best example was with the centerpieces. We would try putting various elements together, take a photograph, and then start over. Then we were able to come to a final decision after reviewing the pictures side-by-side (see below).

We loved using Pinterest to create a design board (one for inspiration, and another for the final product) and it was really fun for my sister Stace and I to contribute to the board since we weren't in Salt Lake for any of the planning. And since my family members are all really creative and wanted to help, we were able to collaborate to make the wedding custom and cost-effective too.

One of my favorite projects was working on the fabric flowers for the centerpieces and flower girls (150+). They were each cut and sewn by hand. It was a labor of love, and it was a great project to do in the weeks leading up to the wedding.

Every single member of our family was at the heart of it all. Not just my mom and sisters, but my Dad and brother were right in there with us through it all. Here are the elements of the wedding that members of my family contributed:

-Wedding dinner name cards (see below)
-150 ribbon wands for the departure
-Reception centerpieces
-16 Custom-made flower girl sashes (my mom found the white dresses at Costco for $17 each, and then my mom sewed the sashes for a more custom, tailored look)
-Flower girl hair clip flowers and flowers for the sashes
-Bride, bridesmaid and flower girl dress alterations
-Custom-made guest book
-Ribbon-wrapped water bottles + stickered Mountain Dew cans
-Candy bar

-and let's not forget packing up, hauling, and delivering everything to the reception site + cleanup (a responsibility that is often overlooked, but takes SO much muscle and work. Thanks men!)

From my perspective, Stef and Matthew's wedding was absolutely perfect. And what made it even better was being able to take a step back as a family and say "this is beautiful because we made it beautiful" I only hope that the bride and groom will remember their perfect day, and remember all the love that went into making it perfect.

Ella's Fourth Birthday Party {Lesson in Listening - Part II}

We opted for a low-key birthday lunch for Ella's fourth birthday. We were going to do a party on a Saturday and invite more of her friends, but she really wanted her party on her birthday (which was a Tuesday). We had five of her preschool girlfriends over for a birthday party lunch right after preschool. As usual, things ended up being a bit more elaborate than I had originally planned, but when it comes to party planning, I can't really help myself.

Following last year's lesson, I asked for a list of requirements from Ella:

"a Hello Kitty wintery party with springtime flowers and butterflies" (tall order, right?)
a pink and purple cake with white roses and sparkles (she saw the rose cake on pinterest, and chose it over a Hello Kitty cake. What can I say, she has sophisticated style).
peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
fizzy Christmas drink {sprite mixed with grenadine flavoring}
hot chocolate
balloons
candy
treat bags for her friends
dancing
coloring

We checked everything off her little list, and I managed to keep the little gathering pretty low key. Yes, low key. I wasn't running around like a crazy person, and I even got to participate in most of the festivities. I did as much as possible beforehand, and it turned out great. The coloring activity consisted of each girl getting a Hello Kitty coloring book ($1 from Michael's), and then it got rolled up, tied with baker's twine, and added to their favor bags. Easiest craft ever!

The cake was the hardest part, as I tried a new frosting technique, and I used cream cheese frosting- big mistake. It tasted great, but it was a little sloppier than I would have liked because it clearly doesn't hold its shape as well as butter cream. And sadly, you can't see it very well in the pictures, but we used edible glitter, and it made it so wintry and glittery. Ella got to put all the sprinkles on the cupcakes for her classmates, and she was in heaven. She also picked out the golden cupcake liners for her classmates.

One of my favorite parts of the party was helping each of the girls pick out the candy for their favor bags. They were so particular! I think the highlights for the girls would have been drinking hot chocolate out of mini mugs, dancing, and eating cake.

The color scheme was taken from the McDonald's Hello Kitty toys she's been obsessed with since before Christmas, but we brightened up the pastels a bit. Can you believe she requested a party based on McDonald's toys, and I agreed to it?

Well, it was her birthday. Some of the elements didn't really complement the others, but she didn't even care because it's what she wanted. She loved it. And that's all that matters.

p.s. the girls actually had two rounds of hot chocolate. The first was Hello Kitty PINK hot chocolate, the second round was the traditional hot chocolate. Brown. The mini hot cocoa mugs were a smash hit! And great because it meant not too much sugar :)

Happy Birthday to You {Valbella Ristorante, NYC}

I had the privilege of shooting this amazing birthday party back in November at in the wine rooms at Valbella Ristorante (Meatpacking District in NYC). It was incredible, as you can see. I hope you are all enjoying the holidays! We have had a whirlwind December, and I can't believe that Christmas is over! And now I can't even blog about all the awesome Christmas stuff we've been up to, cause at this point, let's face it, it's old news. And heading into the Jan/Feb/Mar duldrums, kind of depressing. So perhaps I'll show you some sunny, lovely Christmasy pictures from Aruba. How does that sound?

By the way, I went to Aruba expecting that all the festive decor I saw would be unique, but no. It was all sun-bleached evergreens and tinsel. So weird. There were a few gems, and these are some of my favorites (with the typical, totally out-of-context examples at the very end.) I've never really been anywhere warm during Christmas, but I wonder if Christmas decor like that in warms places everywhere? Chime in, Californians!

How gorgeous is this friend of mine? She was such a natural in front of the camera, and I love that we made the shoot work, despite the weather. I love photography because it really keeps me on my toes, and I never really know what to expect when I head out the door for a session. We shot in the rain (and the five short minutes when it wasn't raining) and then found the grotto of a beautiful church. I love the result.

Handprint Ornaments {Easy Christmas Gift}

Last year we made a dozen of these. Easy to mail, inexpensive to make, sentimental, perfect. We bought a set matte red glass balls, and then used green acrylic paint to make Ella's handprint on one side and Jonesy's handprint on the other side. After they dried I took a fine-point sharpie and wrote "Christmas 2010 - NYC" and then put their names and exact ages (years + months) next to their handprints.

I attached a simple cream-colored grosgrain ribbon to each, mailed a set to each grandparent (in case one broke) and then kept the rest for myself.

It was inexpensive set of gifts that were cheap to mail, and they turned out beautifully. One tip though, it's nearly impossible to get a newborn to uncurl their hand, put it in paint, and then place it perfectly on the ornament... so, do it while they are sleeping. Ella was nearly 3 at the time and it was a breeze!

This would be a great "baby's first Christmas ornament too

This year I loved unpacking these ornaments with their tiny hand-prints. I am sure I will treasure them more and more as they continue to grow.

E's Cookie and Cocoa Social {Holiday Kids Party}

Last year we put together a little holiday party for a few of Ella's friends. At this little social the girls:

Made spritz cookies (which they covered with mountains of sprinkles)
Colored festive pillowcases that reminded the girls to be extra good
Ate a festive lunch, complete with a peanut butter tree the kids decorated with Craisins.
Had holiday mani-pedis (red and green toes, sparkly silver fingers) while they watched a fun Christmas special. It was Little Einsteins Christmas Wish, if you must know.
Ate their freshly baked cookies and drank hot cocoa with marshmallows
Left with a bag of cookies and a set of hair clips that Ella and I made (We pinned them onto cardstock trees and wrapped them up. I wanted to keep one for myself, they looked so cute. Ella picked out all the ribbon, chose the button or mini yo-yo for each clip, and assisted me :)

I was lucky to have my amazing mom and sister Erin here last year, and the event went so smoothly when I had two assistants (slaves) to help me with the 5 girls and all the logistics involved. I really wish I could have assistants for every little gathering I host.

I'm hoping to pull off another Cookie and Cocoa Social, but this year it's definitely going to be a last-minute endeavor. I like to keep my friends on their toes.

Are you hosting any holiday parties this year? I had grand plans for a holiday wrapping party (complete with fabulous wrapping stations and accessories, and an Italian soda/dessert bar), but I'll be doing that next year. I hope.

Holiday Train Show {at Grand Central Station}

There are several holiday train shows around the city, but I was totally caught off guard by the train show at Grand Central Station. It is very small and unassuming, but it was amazing! We visited last year after my sister's friend Lindsay (shout out to my Brooklyn friend!) highly recommended it, and I'm so glad that we went.

There's something incredible about seeing your life in miniature. The streets of Manhattan, the subway, the Metro North trains stopping at the platform... it's just wonderful.

Grand Central Station is amazing at Christmas, so definitely go grab some Junior's Cheesecake in the concourse and then check out the train show. Did I mention that it's also free? Details HERE

Keep it Simple {Easy Christmas Ideas}

The holidays can be really overwhelming for me. I constantly feel the need and desire to be doing something festive and memorable, and since there is something to do every single day in this city, it's even more stressful.

I'm trying my best to take a step back and remember that our days don't have to be adventure-filled to be magical. Creating the magic doesn't take much more than putting on Christmas music, having a cup of hot cocoa, or reading Christmas stories.

Or try dressing up your kids pb&j by using a festive cookie cutter. It takes just a little bit of effort, but watch their eyes light up when you make the ordinary extraordinary.

Advent Calendar Idea {Teeny Tiny Gifts}

Happy December to you all! Did it sneak up on you too? I promised myself I'd enjoy Thanksgiving to the fullest this year, and I guess I did, because now I'm a wee bit behind.

Thank goodness I have photos of my advent calendar from last year to show you :) Don't those tiny little presents look fancy? Guess what's inside them? Juice boxes, fruit snacks, boxes of yogurt-covered raisins, and the long, skinny ones are Trader Joe's mini chocolate bars. Fancy indeed. They're wrapped up and tied with baker's twine or decorated with a candy necklace or candy cane here and there. It was inexpensive, fun, and I can create an entirely different look each year for my advent calendar.

O Family {New York City Family Portraits}

I had three family sessions in Central Park on this amazing, amazing day in early November. I'm not going to say that this was my favorite of all (because, like a mother with more than one child, they're all my favorites for different reasons [insert smiley face]), but taking portraits of beautiful people who are effortless in front of the camera AND have a darling baby who smiles at the drop of a hat makes me really, really happy. I always say that I could have posted every shot from the session I'm posting about, but this time I really mean it. And HELLO gorgeous styling. Don't you think these colors are perfect for autumn in Central Park?

They say they've never modeled, but I think they're liars. You be the judge.

Thanksgiving in NYC {Take 2}

While I'm busy finishing up some of my last portrait sessions of the year (stay tuned for more previews), I'm also busy thinking about Thanksgiving and the holiday season to come. We're staying put in NYC again this year, and I am so happy to be spending quality time with my husband and kids, rather than spending most of the holiday traveling. We will, of course, miss our families dearly, but we are looking forward to the holidays here in the city. NYC is pure magic during the holidays.

What do we have planned for Thanksgiving? Well, we're going to see the balloons inflated for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade the night before, then I am still debating as to whether I want to get up at 4am for a prime spot on the parade route, we're going to do a popcorn turkey again this year while we watch the parade (whether that's on Central Park West or on our comfy couch), and I will definitely be making mini pies for the kiddos again this year.

Originally, we were just going to go out to eat at a restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner or get Chinese takeout. I think I've been successfully talked out of that. Last year I made everything, which was really just too much for our first Thanksgiving alone, and this year I'm just making my favorite things from scratch: candied yams, homemade rolls, and pie. I accidentally cooked our turkey upside-down last year. It was still delicious, but I'm taking a break this year. It was just too much.

Our original plan still sounds kind of lovely, don't you think?

the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons being inflated. They fill up both streets on the north and south sides of the Museum of Natural History. We're going early this year so we don't get trampled to death by tourists.

Lincoln Center {New York City}

This is one of my favorite places. I adore the architecture, the travertine, the layout of the buildings, the contrasting and complementary modern/contemporary design elements, and the sprawling spaces that somehow make you feel like you have the city to yourself, but that you're at the center of it all at the same time. I especially love watching my mesmerized children stare at the fountain, and then run free in the open space as if they'd never seen such a thing.

I am not a huge fan of the color gold in general, but I could bask in the warm glow of the lobby of the Metropolitan Opera for the rest of my life. Glorious.

Lincoln Center is definitely on my must see list.

Being a parent is absolutely exhausting. Especially when you have children in the 12-36 month range and they basically just run from object to object and place to place and do whatever they want at warp speed. Warp speed, I tell you. I have no idea where they get all that energy. I think this little darling single-handedly wore out her mom, dad, and grandma during this session. And maybe me too. I don't think she stood in one place for more than 3 seconds together, which was highly entertaining from my perspective as a photographer...

I have been taking portraits of darling Audrey once a month since she was a week old. For her eleven month-portraits we met up at my favorite part of Central Park. I could never get tired of shooting at Bethesda Fountain, the Mall, and the surrounding area. Amazing.

This is the first of many fabulous fall family photo shoots (try to say that ten times fast). I'm hoping to post as many sessions as possible while I work through them, and then I'll probably spend my winter downtime blogging all my summer and early fall sessions that I've been too busy to post.

Falling Leaves {DIY Autumn Decor}

I came across these images from last year and it reminded me to pick up a few extra leaves as we've wandered around Central Park (now that the leaves have finally turned). For Thanksgiving decor, it doesn't get much easier than leaves tied to thread and taped to door moldings.

I tried to get fancy last year by soaking leaves in glycerin or pressing them between books, but neither worked well for me. I simply hung the upside down by the stems ans that was that. I loved how organic and natural this looks. The leaves dried beautifully, and we just kept adding fresh leaves to the mix so that there was always a pop of new color.

Because most of you are probably in places where the leaves have already turned, you have the advantage of picking up leaves that have already dried. Here in NYC, I found that the red leaves and then the large solid brown leaves worked the best for this project. Anything yellow just turned spotty and brown. SO, if they aren't already dried, go for red, brown, and orange.

The best part is the way the leaves would spin and sway when someone walked by. So simple, so beautiful.

This Halloween costume-themed shoot is one I will always remember. This darling newborn joined her family 2 days before Halloween, and they wanted to do something a bit different for her newborn session. What an incredible way to illustrate this family's moment in time on so many levels. A curious toddler, a perfect little newborn (in a hand-knitted baby bear costume) a gorgeous location in NYC neighborhood, and all the whimsy and wonder associated with childhood. Simply brilliant. I love my clients.

We'll be shooting more traditional portraits of baby G and her family soon, but I absolutely love this approach. Don't you?

ps. What was so brilliant about this shoot (aside from the obvious) was that their mom made it as much about her toddler as it was about her newborn. I've seen some serious sibling rivalry associated with newborn shoots, but not here. I guess that's the key. Give everyone some camera love.

Harlem Meer Pumpkin Sail {Halloween in NYC}

I love this city.

Last Sunday we attended the annual Pumpkin Sail at the Harlem Meer in Central Park. Most free events in NYC always seem to be really crowded and overwhelming, but this one wasn't. We showed up early to check out the pumpkins up close, and then walked to the other side of the meer to sit up on the huge black boulders and watch from the other side. "Meer" is the Dutch word for "small sea." My daughter thinks it's the Harlem mirror, which I guess is right in its own way too :)

The sailing began just after dusk. It was a beautiful sight. There were 50 lighted pumpkins strung together and pulled by a spooky witch in a kayak. Unfortunately, the last half of the pumpkins got detached and were left to float in the middle of the meer. It was very sad for those little pumpkins, and the little kids were really worried about those stranded pumpkins.

Put this on your to-do list for next year, New Yorkers.

Happy Halloween Decor {Kid-Friendly Crafts Too}

I like to focus on the "Happy" aspect of Happy Halloween. Not only because I have kids, but because I am just about the biggest scaredy-cat around when it comes to anything scary or creepy. Obviously I'm fearless since I'm a New Yorker, and I love heights (and jumping from them), roller coasters, and daring adventures. But I'm really affected by scary movies and music, and since I already have an incredibly vivid imagination, I don't need any other reasons to make myself nervous. My poor husband LOVES scary movies, but I won't allow him to watch them while I'm present. Ridiculous, right?

Anyway, you can definitely see how that translates with regards to our Halloween decor. No bloody daggers, big nasty spiders, eyeballs in jars, or otherwise creepy images that might cause my children to be afraid in their own home. Maybe as my children get older, I'll get braver too. For now, I'll stick with the cutesy stuff. Orange twinkle-lights, homemade Halloween decorations, frosted sugar cookies, you get the picture.

We made pumpkin garlands from foam pumpkins we got 20 for $1 at Target, and 10 sparkly ones for $1. I had Ella draw faces on the jack-o-lanterns, and my favorite is the sad pumpkin who is crying. I did a simple running stitch to link them all together. I made one with all of Ella's pumpkins, and one with alternating plain and sparkly pumpkins. We also bought some expandable crepe paper globes for $2 and $2.50 from Target, and I pulled out my Christmas advent calendar to use for Halloween. I filled it with little pumpkins, dum-dum ghosts, battery-powered votive candles that flicker (awesome!), and little cards that Ella drew with jack-o-lantern faces. This is by far the "scariest" display I've ever made, but it looks a lot happier in person. You'll just have to come see for yourself :)

Dum-Dum Ghosts {Easy Halloween Craft}

These are quick, easy, inexpensive, and CUTE. We used to make these with tissue paper, but I had the thought to try coffee filters and they are perfect! It's nice to get an original idea (at least original to me) that works from time-to-time.

We made a little assembly line and whipped out about 30 of these in no time. All you need is:

Standard-size coffee filters (usually $2 or less for about 100 filters- they are also amazing for making paper snowflakes)
Dum-Dum suckers
Baker's twine, ribbon, or string

Simply place the Dum-Dum sucker on the center of the coffee filter, fold the coffee filter around the sucker, and tie a string around it. I started out using Blo-Pops, but they are actually too big. Coffee filters make the perfect "skirt" for the Dum-Dums, and they can even stand up on their own.

I let Ella go crazy coloring the ghosts with magic markers, and then we upcycled a mayonaisse jar to create a cute, portable, unbreakable means of transporting them to her preschool. A little paint, a cute haunted house sticker, wrapped it with baker's twine and voila. Perfect. We are giving these out to trick-or-treaters this year too.

Pier 46 {Charles Street & H. Hudson Parkway, NYC}

Shooting in a new part of the city gets me really, really excited because it helps me see the city from a different perspective. I met a family here for a session a few weeks back, and it was a place I would probably never have gone otherwise. It was a beautiful, peaceful, quiet place, and it was fun to see the Empire State Building from a new angle, see the progress on 1 World Trade Center, and it's fun to see sweeping views of the city from the island itself. Oh, and you can see New Jersey too. Nothing but love to you, Jersey!

I live on the Upper West Side and absolutely adore it (and couldn't live without ready access to Central Park), but the more I see of the city, the more I realize how many incredible neighborhoods there are. The West Village continues to steal pieces of my heart.

Sugar Crystals With Custom Colors {Hand-Dyed}

I hosted a party last November that I forgot to blog about. Big shocker, right? If I had a dollar for every event or photo shoot I didn't post about, I'd have enough money for the J.Crew boots I'm currently coveting.

Anyway. It was a coloring party, so I used a rainbow color palate for the decor and made my first rainbow cake. I pulled all my sprinkles from my pantry and realized that I had the entire rainbow, except for yellow. So I decided to try dying clear sugar crystals.

On my quest to create the perfect shade of golden yellow, I ended up with about 6 different shades of yellow, and absolutely loved the creative process. When I compared my gorgeous yellow to my store-bought sprinkles, my heart sunk. Ugh. Hideous.

How had I not thought of this before! So I turned back to my clear sugar crystals, and using the base of the yellow, I created green, then used part of the green to make blue, etc. It was amazing and so much fun to create a rainbow of colors that suited my style better. Instead of true primaries, my colors ended up a bit more earthy and natural. You can see a sneak peek of the party with the cupcakes above, but rest assured there will be more rainbow sprinkle goodness when I post the rest of the images.

The possibilities are endless- try it!

How to:

In a small bowl, mix a small amount of colored dye with the sugar crystals, and then leave them out on wax paper to dry.

Tips:

A small glass prep bowl and a baby spoon worked perfectly for mixing.

The Wilton paste dye works better than liquid dye (you can find it at most craft stores and cake supply stores)

Start small with the dye- even the tiniest drop will go far

As mentioned, I started with yellow and worked my way around the rainbow, allowing for custom colors at every step. If you want true primaries and secondaries, start with pure red, yellow, and blue. Mix the colors together while the dye is still wet.

p.s. For some reason I always gets bursts of inspiration on Fridays. I always make time for creative endeavors on the weekend, so perhaps that's why. This weekend I'm going to try making Panna Cotta with passionfruit sauce and create Jones' Halloween Costume. Wish me luck!

Fruit Roll-ups {Yum}

I stole these pictures from my sister Stacey's blog because they made me swoon, and they made me hungry.

For those of you with an abundance of fruit, you should definitely try making homemade fruit roll-ups. It's not exactly easy to procure and transport farm-fresh fruit en masse (on a budget!) here in NYC, especially when you don't have a car... but seeing these gorgeous baker's twine-wrapped fruit rolls and hearing the rave reviews is almost enough to make me want to try. Almost.

Tatum's 4th Birthday Party {New York City}

P.S. Can you believe all the details? Amazing, right?

This incredible birthday party was held at the swanky Soho House in the meatpacking district (one of my favorite parts of the city). As someone who loves to plan and throw birthday parties, I learned so much while I captured Tatum's special day. It was really just amazing to watch it all unfold, and see how all the details came perfectly together. Miss Tatum's amazing mother is a designer, and I am blown away by the all the details she attended to. I absolutely loved the colorful balloons and decor, the custom banners, the water labels, the custom table decor and cupcake toppers, and the fabulous kid-friendly food. And oh my goodness, don't even get me started on the cake. It was out-of-this-world incredible.

Tinkerbell and Skully from A Princess Visit kept the crowd entertained the entire time with an interactive show with magic tricks, music, and lots of laughter. As you can see, they brought fairy princess and pirate dress-ups for all the children, and Tinkerbell painted faces while Skully worked his magic with balloon art. It was a truly spectacular event, and the kids were in heaven from the minute they stepped through the door.

Hiring a photographer for a birthday party or event is such a wise idea because it's impossible to host a fabulous event, entertain your guests, enjoy the event, and document it at the same time. How many times have you put together a dinner party or birthday celebration and then said "whoops! I forgot to take pictures!"

My mentality is as follows: what's the point in creating all those amazing details if you don't have someone there to capture them? Sure, you'll remember with perfect clarity now, but are you really going to remember in 30 years? No way.

When Tatum plans her own 4 year-old's birthday celebration in years to come, she'll be able to look back and see and remember every single detail that her parents so lovingly planned in honor of her big day. What a wonderful gift.

Reflections {West Village, NYC}

I've always been fascinated by the reflective quality of water. With clear, shallow pools and puddles, you can see not only right through to the bottom, but from the right perspective you can also see what the water reflects. If you really look, you see something entirely different (Just like a Magic Eye book. I loved those books! Did you?).

Walking around NYC after a day of rain is absolutely fascinating, because I see the city from a different perspective as I navigate through the puddles. In this case, looking down helps me to look up.

Portrait of a Tiny New Yorker {Highline Park NYC}

p.s. This Highline Park session was hands-down the easiest shoot I've ever done. I usually tell clients 1-2 hours, and we land somewhere in the middle. With this shoot, we were done in 45 minutes flat, which was kind of a pity given that baby M is just about the cutest boy I've ever seen, and his mama is absolutely gorgeous. I should have dragged it out as long as possible. What was I thinking?

Casa Barilla in Central Park {New York City}

My friends and I took our kids paid a visit to Casa Barilla in Central Park a few weeks back, and it was absolutely wonderful. Not only did they have a Piccolini Playground with three stations full of fun games and activities just for kids (including pasta making and free apron too), but there were also free cooking classes and demos, a sample bar, and everyone left with a goodie bag. Did you know that Barilla launched a line of Piccolini Pasta that is packed with a full serving of veggies? Seriously? Awesome.

Why am I posted in this in retrospect, you ask? Well, I saw one of the coolest ideas for an at-home herb garden that I've ever seen. I'd love to do a mini version of this at home on my kitchen table, or on my kitchen counter against the back splash. It's perfect, don't you think? The rest of the pics are just for fun. Oh, and I met Ellie Kreger there too. She is just lovely.

Ava's Birthday Party {NYC}

I dropped my daughter off at one of her best friend's birthday parties a few weeks back, but before I left, I couldn't help but capture some of the simple, kid-friendly details that made this party something special. And of course, I snapped a few portraits of the beautiful birthday princess herself.

What I didn't get pictures of before I left, but heard about from my daughter later on (who was grinning from ear-to-ear as she bounced up and down), was that there was face painting, giant coloring pages, pizza, and the most amazing favor bags EVER. I guess I need to step it up next year.

p.s. I never knew you could get personalized birthday balloons. Awesome.
